Depth key for tight end position
A year ago, the tight end position was more known for the fact that Mychal Rivera's sister played on the hit show Glee than anything else.
Rivera entered last season with 11 catches for 112 yards. His tight end teammates were two incoming freshmen in Brendan Downs, who the Vols took away from Duke, and Cameron Clear, who was on watch to see how quickly the 270-pound Memphis native would be moved to the defensive line or offensive tackle.
Last fall, the trio combined for 33 catches for 382 yards and a touchdown. Rivera accounted for 29 of those catches and 344 of the yards as the two newcomers felt their way through the offense and adjusting to the college game.
Heading into this season, the tight end spot is now one with depth and options for head coach Derek Dooley and Jim Chaney, who have both been tight end coaches in college and the NFL.
