Spartans looking to add another 2012 recruit?
One of the visitors to the Michigan State Green and White game was Jamare Mills of Blinn Community College in Texas. The 6-foot-6, 262-pound prospect is looking to finish up school this summer and join a team in the fall.SpartanMag.com's Take:
Mills actually graduated back in 2011 so he is less than a year removed from high school. If he can graduate from Blinn prior to the fall of 2012, he will actually be a 4 to play 3 prospect. That means he will still has a red-shirt available and 3-years of playing eligibility.
SpartanMag.com scouted Mills back in the spring and summer of 2010. He was one of the better big tight end prospects in the Midwest that year. He skill-set and body tyoe reminded us of a former tight end recruit that signed with Michigan State back in 2004, 6-foot-6, 264-pound Tom Kaczmarek.
Mills had the following to say to SpartanMag.com about his recruitment.
"I am visiting Michigan State this weekend," he said. "They have offered me a scholarship and so has the University of Cincinnati. I hope to make a decision sometime next week. I am going to finish up school in the summer so I can join a team in the fall."
Coming out of high school Mills had a solid list of scholarships, but several bigger BCS teams withheld offers due to his academic status. Michigan State was one of the schools that fell into that category. The Spartans liked Mills, but wanted to make sure he was NCAA Clearinghouse approved before they pulled the trigger.
If Mills is able to graduate in the summer he would make a lot of sense for Michigan State for one important reason. At 262-pounds and 6-foot-6, Mills has the ability to play tight end, but he could potentially bulk up and play offensive tackle. Both tight end and offensive tackle are positions of need for Michigan State.
Kaczmarek made the switch to tackle at Michigan State and had a bright future before an injury cut his career short. Current starting offensive tackle Dan France played tight end and defensive end in high school at a size of 6-foot-6, 265-pounds. France actually spent some time at the Spartan Camp working with the tight end prospects.
SpartanMag.com will be keeping in contact with Mills in the coming days. It is possible he could make his decision and join the Spartan class of 2012 later this summer.
Michigan State has already added 2 additional players to the class of 2012 in Taybor Pepper and Jack Conklin. Some have wondered where the extra scholarship room is coming from? The best way to figure that out is to look at which scholarship players (that were not hurt) did not participate much in the Green and White Game.
Attrition is part of college football. Last year the departures of players like Donald Spencer and Patrick White surprised many. In addition, injuries forced the retirement of players like Joe Boisture, David Barrent and Zach Hueter. It is very possible that some spots will be opening up and Mark Dantonio wants to make sure he has quality players to fill them. That is where a player like Mills could fit in.
