Chalk Talk: Picking up the pieces

Each week during the football season, former Tennessee assistant coach Doug Mathews joins us to share his thoughts on the Vols. Well coach, it was a tough weekend for Tennessee. How do you think the Vols will react, what do you think the game says about the rest of the season?

I think there's a couple of different ways that you can approach things. I think the head coach and the two coordinators have to look at several things. Fans can do whatever they want, but the leadership on this coaching staff have to talk to this team and ask, 'are we the team that played the first 30-40 minutes of that game or are we the team that played the last 20 minutes?'

There were lots of things to feel good about in that game. For most of the night we showed poise, moved the ball with long drives on offense. Then we were also the team that ended the night with three straight punts on offense and got 13 yards in our last six possessions.
