Chalk Talk: Vandy week

Each week during the football season, former Tennessee assistant coach Doug Mathews joins us to share his thoughts on the Vols. With everything happening this week, I'm not sure how many people are still interested in the on-the-field action, but Tennessee did try--finally--to make some defensive adjustments last week. What did you think of what they did, and what changed after halftime that opened things up for Missouri?

They did come in with a fairly significant change in their plan and I thought did a really nice job of executing it, at least in the first half. In a nutshell, they played an awful lot of zone. They started the game with two defensive linemen, three linebackers and six defensive backs. Then they alternated between a three-man front and four-man front.

In the three-man front they used Maggitt as a spy on Franklin, which I thought was really effective. I thought they mixed it up well in the first half and did some nice things on that side of the ball.
