Vols vs. Wildcats: The match-up

It's hard to believe it's come to this. Tennessee (3-7, 0-7) hosts Kentucky (2-9, 0-7) on Saturday still looking for its first SEC win of the year and without the head coach it began the season with in August. Two events which are not unrelated. It's the season finale for the match-up, so let's not waste any more time.

Kentucky's secondary ranks near the bottom of the league in most categories, but not quite as far down as their Volunteer counterparts. What the 'Cats have been near historically bad at is simply letting opponents complete throw-after-throw. Opposing offenses are completing 68% of their passes on the year (last in the SEC) and Kentucky has come up with just five interceptions this season. Four true freshmen see extensive action in the secondary and that's led to some problems (246 yards passing given up to SEC teams).

It's tough to get a read on Tennessee in general, but perhaps toughest here, at a spot where most assumed the Vols were talented and capable of playing winning football. That certainly wasn't the case on Saturday, the top-ranked passing offense in the SEC was grounded against Vandy, completing just 19-of-41 passes for 141 yards with one TD and three picks. Tyler Bray was pulled from the game at one point, returned, and the struggles continued. The wideouts remain electric but execution was erratic last week to say the least. This should be a huge advantage for the Vols, but they can't mail it again this week.
