Any concerns that Tennessee (4-1) may have been adversely affected by an eight day lay-off between games were quickly allayed on Monday night. The Vols threw a lockdown defensive effort at visiting Oakland tonight, cruising to a 77-50 victory.
Tennessee took care of business at home against a mid-major opponent in the kind of manner that sent fans home with a smile after this one. The Vols never trailed for a moment in the contest, and spent the majority of the evening playing with a lead in excess of 20 points.
The story of the night for Tennessee was their collective defensive effort, which stifled the Grizzlies for most of the game. The first half defense from Tennessee was simply outstanding.
Oakland made just 5-of-32 shots from the floor (15.6%) and only 1-of-11 from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes. Meanwhile, Tennessee executed at a high level on the other end, shooting a red hot 54.2% (13-of-24) in the first half. The first half defense constituted the lowest field goal percentage for a half for an opposing team during Martin's time on the job.
