Vols get back on winning side

Box Score

Tennessee (9-7, 1-3) avoided it's worst start to conference play in two decades today, grabbing their first SEC win of the season in decisive fashion over Mississippi State (7-9, 2-2). The Vols took control of the game early, beat back a potential rally early in the second half and cruised to a 72-57 win.

Tennessee showed no sense of panic in facing what could fairly be called a must win situation. The Vols trailed for only a moment in the game, by one point briefly in the first half, and essentially kept the Bulldogs at arm's length all afternoon.

The Vols shot 52% in the first half and never really gave the underdog visitors any real reason to feel like they could pull the upset.

"It's a bit of a relief for sure, knowing we're not on that losing streak anymore. We've just got to get on a winning streak now," sophomore Josh Richardson said after helping his team to the win.
