Richardson turning into savvy vet
Even as college basketball has become increasingly dominated by 'short-term' superstars who hone their craft on campus for a year or two before heading to the pros, the value of the veteran has steadily grown. Conventional wisdom suggests that, with few exceptions, a blend of youth and experience is the perfect mix for a deep NCAA run.
When fans start listing all the reasons the 2013-14 season has the potential to be a memorable for the Vols, Josh Richardson may not be the first name that springs to mind. But he's exactly the kind of savvy veteran that you'll find getting the job done on a good basketball team.
Richardson isn't a superstar, but in two years in Knoxville he's proven himself to be a solid role player with the potential to be a defensive force. He's the valuable commodity that can impact the game in a variety of ways that don't include scoring the basketball.
In short, Richardson is a guy who understands winning basketball and how his talents can best fit into a successful team. That may not be the stuff of Sportscenter highlights, but what he brings to the table is a critical component for Tennessee's fortunes this season.
