January 22, 2011Newly named Pittsburgh coach Todd Graham picked up his first commitment and, symbolically, Corey Davis is from Texas. The Gladewater running back may be Pitt's first Texas commit under Graham, who went to North Mesquite and was coaching at Allen when he started to rise in the college ranks.
Pitt's emphasis on recruiting in Texas will skyrocket with hiring Graham from Tulsa and TCU joining the Big East Conference to give Pitt and the rest of the struggling football conference a much higher profile among Texas players.
Graham also has hired Texas high school coaching legend Todd Ddodge, who won four state titles with a fifth appearance in a Class 5A championship in five years at Southlake Carroll before taking on the head coaching gig at North Texas, which ended in Novemeber.
Davis was recruited by Graham while Graham was at Tulsa. Davis rushed for 1,750 yards and 28 touchdowns at Gladewater.
Pitt is making a run at Tulsa commit Jason Frimpong a top athlete from Irving MacArthur. Pitt tried to lure Mesquite Horn receiver Jakeem Grant/db] based on the relationship from Tulsa but Grant committed to Texas Tech this week after getting the Big 12 offer.
Daingerfield receiver Keyarris Garrett, a Tulsa commit, was visiting Pittsburgh this weekend along with Tulsa Booker T. Washington running back Isaac Bennett.
Pitt also is recruiting several Texas players including Austin McCallum athlete Michael Sorrells (6-2, 205), who for 1,630 yards and 24 touchdowns on 193 carres.
Depending on how some commitments fall, Pitt may have an interest in Bullard Brook Hill's speedy athlete Tyler Baker as well.
On Pitt's roster are Texas cornerback Saheed Imoru (Alief Hastings/Navarro) and Cy Falls safety Kolby Gray.
