KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Crediting new football coach Lane Kiffin for taking a $2 million salary in order to better pay assistant coaches, Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton on Thursday unveiled salaries totaling roughly $3.5 million for Kiffin's inaugural staff.

In sum, Tennessee is projected to outlay $5.625 million for its entire coaching staff in 2009. Additionally, Phillip Fulmer is scheduled to receive the first yearly installment - $1.5 million ? of his $6 million buyout, and the Vols will owe some money to former offensive coordinator Dave Clawson, who since has been hired as Bowling Green's coach.

"We will have a staff that is well compensated, but I feel like the experience that comes with that staff warrants that in many regards," Hamilton said. "Based on 2008 numbers, and I do look at in total because it is a line item on the budget, we will be about fourth in the SEC.

"I think any time you have new hires and you bring people in from the outside, you're probably going to be facing some kind of uptick, generally speaking, in salaries. In addition to that, we knew and Lane and I had the conversation very early on about the kind of staff he wanted to hire and who some of those coaches might be and that it might take some extra dollars to get that done. Particularly as it relates to the two highest-paid members of the staff [Monte Kiffin and Ed Orgeron], the dollars available to those individuals, those dollars would not have been available if not hiring those two individuals. We wanted to assemble a good staff, and this hopefully has given Lane enough resources to get that done."

In figures first reported by VolQuest.com, Monte Kiffin will make $1.2 million this year with a $300,000 retention bonus to be paid Dec. 31, 2009; recruiting coordinator Orgeron will make $650,000; offensive coordinator Jim Chaney will make $380,000; linebackers coach Lance Thompson will earn $350,000; running backs coach Eddie Gran will earn $185,000; tight ends/tackles coach James Cregg, receivers coach Frank Wilson and quarterbacks coach David Reaves each will make $150,000; and defensive backs coach Willie Mack Garza Jr. will make $110,000. Approximately $45,000 of Thompson's 2009 salary goes to Alabama, which had a 20-percent buyout on Thompson's deal with the Tide.

In a change of previous pacts, Monte Kiffin, Orgeron, Chaney and Thompson all receive three-year contracts. The elder Kiffin receives a $300,000 retention bonus at year's end and in each of the subsequent years of his contract. While Kiffin's salary in years two and three increases by approximately $100,000 in each of those years, his retention bonuses those years decrease by $100,000. Ultimately, Monte Kiffin's annual salary across the term of the deal averages $1.5 million.

"Well, in those particular guys, really, three of the four are coordinators. One happens to be the recruiting coordinator," Hamilton said, referencing the trio of Kiffin, Orgeron and Chaney. "In essence, Lance is the only one not a coordinator that has a three-year deal. And it was to get the individual involved in that particular equation. This was necessary to seal the deal for Lane to be able to hire the guys he wanted to be able to hire and that will give us the best chance for success."
