Golden provides lift off bench

For a head coach who inherited a roster with virtually no proven performers on it, Cuonzo Martin has been somewhat reluctant to tweak his starting five. Through 23 games he's only done it four times, but tonight's move to bench point guard Trae Golden was undoubtedly his most dramatic move yet.

Golden had undeniably been the Vols' offensive catalyst during the non-conference portion of the schedule, but his production has been uneven during SEC play.

Uneven enough that Martin made the bold move to remove Golden from the starting line-up tonight in favor of junior Skylar McBee, whose familiarity with the point guard spot is hardly extensive.

When it comes to handling his team, Martin insists, emphatically, that he's not into sending 'messages' by taking away minutes. What he is 'into' is being extremely up front with his players on what he expects from them, and when they fall short, he's not shy about doling out consequences.
