Thomas shows versatility at Ole Miss camp

Tino Thomas arrived in Oxford, Miss., for the Ole Miss Elite Camp last Saturday with two Southeastern Conference offers in his proverbial back pocket.

Thomas, a 6-foot, 184-pound athlete from Memphis (Melrose), Tenn., is greedy. He wants to earn a third SEC offer, and after his performance in front of the Rebels' coaches, he's liking his chances.

"The camp went real well," Thomas said. "I met all the coaches and they seemed really happy to have me there. I just went out there and performed and did the best I could. I love to compete. When it comes to competing, I'm the man. Some of the coaches told me I did a great job. They said they liked my size and they'd like to see me at Ole Miss."

Thomas was timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.47 seconds. He posted a 33.5-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot, 1-inch broad jump. On the field, Thomas was active, showing a physical element to his play at safety and the athleticism to excel as a college cornerback.

"They told me an offer is coming," Thoms said. "They told me I was impressive. They told me they're going to evaluate the tape of the camp."

Thomas said he told the Ole Miss coaches he didn't care which position they wanted him to play. He simply wants to play SEC football.

"I enjoy playing both," Thomas said. "If they need me at safety, I'll play safety. If they want me at corner, I'll play corner."

Thomas said he and Ole Miss wide receivers coach Ron Dickerson Jr., who recruits Memphis for the Rebels, are "real close." Thomas has offers from Arkansas, Kentucky, Duke, Memphis, Southern Mississippi and Middle Tennessee. He declined to name a favorite Wednesday night, but he said if Ole Miss were to jump into the mix, the Rebels "would stand real high in that group because it's Ole Miss. I like the head coach, Houston Nutt, and I pretty much like the whole coaching staff. They'd stand out real well."

Thomas has a 3.8 grade-point average, including a 3.1 GPA in his core classes. He's taking the ACT for the first time Saturday.
