The state of Ohio is loaded with good defensive backs in the 2013 class, many of which are firmly on Ohio State's radar. Solon product Darian Hicks would certainly fall into that category, as the 6-foot, 175-pound corner was a standout at the Ohio State two-day underclassmen camp back in June. Hicks was back in Columbus two weeks ago to watch the Buckeyes take on Michigan State in the Big Ten opener.

"They did OK, it wasn't their best performance," said Hicks of the game. "The stadium is really big. After the game I talked to coach (Taver) Johnson. He just said he was happy that I stopped by, he wasn't too happy since they just lost the game so he didn't have too much to say."

In addition to Ohio State, Hicks is hearing from a handful of BCS level programs and says a school from the SEC is standing out the most to him right now.

"Michigan State, Michigan, South Carolina, and Louisville (are showing interest)," he said. "South Carolina is my favorite school right now. I just like the way they play and stuff, I like their defense a lot."

On the field, Solon is off to a strong 6-1 start, though the Comets did take their first loss of the season last week to perennial power Mentor.

"We were playing good up until the game last week against Mentor," he said. "We just played bad. We just need to play hard and physical and do our jobs."

Solon is in the thick of the playoff race in Region 1 right now and Hicks knows there's a solid chance that a re-match with Mentor could be looming in a few weeks.

" It's a learning experience because we know that we will probably play them again," he explained. "We'll be ready for what they're going to do. We just have to play differently when the time comes."

Hicks and company have a huge bounce back game on Friday night as they travel to Twinsburg (5-2) for a game that will have a lot of playoff points on the line.
