Ground game under the gun

Everyone watching this Tennessee football team closely knows that the Vols have struggled to run the ball against Florida for the last several years. But there's really been no team that the Vols have struggled running the ball against more than Georgia in the last two seasons.

Since the arrival of Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and his 3-4 defensive look, finding daylight in the run game has been like trying to find the sun in an Alaskan winter for the Vols. It hasn't happened often and when it has, it hasn't lasted long.

In two games against Grantham's defense, the Vols have amassed minus 11 yards rushing. If you take out the sacks the Vols rushed for 68 yards on 33 carries in their first match-up when Grantham was in his first season. Last year, Tennessee had 22 yards on 16 attempts. In four games this season, opponents are averaging a modest 135.5 yards a game on the ground on the Dawgs. Head coach Derek Dooley said the challenge in finding success against Grantham's unit on the ground is two-fold.
