Will 3-4 familiarity help Vols in Athens?
Though it's cropping up more and more in college football, the 3-4 defense is still something of a wrinkle for most offenses to get ready for. That's not necessarily true for Tennessee anymore, whose offense has gotten ample looks at a 3-4 scheme since last spring.
It remains to be seen if that familiarity will improve Tennessee's chances against Georgia's stout defense on Saturday, but it certainly can't hurt. The Vols' have been almost casually stymied by the Bulldogs in their last two meetings, finding the going extremely difficult, particularly on the ground.
How much that had to do with the 'Dawgs' scheme and how much was a result was indicative of a talent gap is debatable. Nevertheless, the results were definitive.
Sam Pittman doesn't expect his unit's new found acquaintance with a 3-4 look to magically turn the tables, but he doesn't dismiss it as a non-factor.
