McCrary has second thoughts

Cedar Grove (Ellenwood, Ga.) quarterback Johnathan McCrary has been to Athens for two camps in just over a month. The Mark Richt Camp left him with an offer, Dawg Night left him with questions.

The 6-foot-3, 180-pound dual-threat quarterback got word on his drive home that another 2013 Georgia quarterback, Camden County's Brice Ramsey, had verbally committed after camp, which he said has required him to rethink some things.

"It did kind of give me second a second thought about coming to Georgia. I know I have other schools that want to start me as a freshman. Alabama and Notre Dame are really pushing for me to come and start as the only 2013 quarterback there," McCrary said. "But it's not really not making me want to come. If we were both there, we'd definitely compete."

The rising-junior, who had announced Georgia as his number one just a few weeks ago, has now started reassessing where exactly the Bulldogs stand in his recruitment.

"I mean, they are pushed back a bit. Not far, but out of my top 10 they have dropped to five maybe. It's just knowing another 2013 quarterback coming… I guess I'll see Sunday. I'm going to Alabama and I'll see what they are talking about."

In addition to his trip to Alabama Sunday, McCrary said he will be in Florida Thursday and Friday. But that doesn't mean he is only eyeing out-of-state options.

"I think right now that Georgia has a lot of athletes. They can't keep most of them in the state of Georgia. My teammate Brandon Green is going to Alabama. My wide receiver Vincent Dallas is headed to Tennessee," explained McCrary. "I want to stay. I want to lead Georgia. I want to take Georgia on my back and be the leader that takes them to a championship."

McCrary said just looking at the talent at Dawg night, he knew if the Bulldog coaches could keep as much talent from Georgia at home, they could be something special.

"They have so much talent out there, on the field yesterday, you could win a championship with those guys."

McCrary is one of those top talents himself. He threw for 3,347 yards while rushing for 700 more his sophomore year. The stand-out quarterback said he recognizes what Ramsey brings to the table but also knows that he himself is also a star prospect.

"[Ramsey] is real good. Got a nice arm. I honestly haven't seen him play in a game but I know the coaches know he's good enough to run their team," McCrary said. "I do all I can do. I know I got good feet. I've already proved myself. I gain respect from my whole team and the teams I play against every time I step on the field."

A true competitor, who stepped up to the call of quarterback when his coach asked for a leader back in the 8th grade, McCrary isn't fazed by this bump in the recruiting road.

"Honestly don't think too much about it, whatever happens, happens. If they are going to take a scholarship, not give full chance to go to a school, then that's what happens."

The pressure of early commits doesn't seem to be weighing on him either.

"The thing is you are young. When you are a rising junior, you have so much time. Pretty much if you commit early, and then you go back and sign with that team, it's a sign of your character," McCrary said. "My character doesn't allow me to lie to a recruiter. When I make my decision, it will be my final decision so I want to be 100 percent sure."

McCrary has made it so he has ample time to ensure he makes the best choice for himself, sticking to his predetermined December 2012 deadline.

"I'm probably going to make my decision in December my senior year, before going to the Dome. I'm going to announce it at the gym in my high school. I want to do it early so I can enroll by January."
