Washington can't wait to compete in Army Bowl

MORE: U.S. Army All-American Bowl roster

Things are going well for Jacksonville (Fla.) Trinity Christian defensive back Nick Washington as of late. His team is 6-1 on the season with an upcoming showdown against Yulee (Fla.) and four-star athlete Derrick Henry this Friday. The Florida commit saw his Gators rout South Carolina 44-11 at the Swamp on Saturday. On Sunday, the Gators held their No. 2 position in the BCS Standings.

Earlier today, the two-way prospect received his U.S. Army All-American Bowl jersey in front of family, friends and classmates.

"It means a lot," Washington said. "I know I'm fortunate to be in the game. There are a lot of good players that won't get this opportunity."

The four-star standout is looking forward to his first trip to Texas to participate in the Army Bowl, which takes place every January in San Antonio's Alamodome. Washington has stopped in the Lone Star State once for a layover on his way to the west coast, but he knows this visit to the Alamo City will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

He won't be the only one wearing blue and orange in San Antonio as fellow Gator recruits Ahmad Fulwood, Daniel McMillian and Jordan Sherit will also be in town, so beware of a few Gator Chomps.

"It's going to be fun going out there and playing with my friends," Washington said. "Even though Sherit cannot play due to his knee injury we will have a great time."

It won't be all fun and games though as Washington knows the practices leading up to the game itself will be full of competition.

"These are the best players in the country," he said. "The competition is going to be awesome."

Competition is something Washington welcomes. In addition to being a BCS-caliber athlete on the gridiron, he is also solid baseball prospect. The shortstop and centerfielder spends a lot of time in the summer traveling for baseball showcases. At times both sports overlap, but he is able to balance it all.

"In the summer it's baseball, but I work out year round for football," Washington said. "I guess you could say I spend equal time on both."

Major League teams have noticed his talent on the diamond, too. The Brewers, Phillies and Royals have checked him out and are evaluating him for the upcoming 2013 MLB Draft.

He will play both sports when he enrolls at Florida next year. He doesn't want to pick one over the other, so he will enjoy both and see what happens with the draft.

Washington is the first player from Trinity Christian to be selected for the All-American Bowl.

"Tennessee Titans running back Jamie Harper played here and my cousin Ahmad Christian is at South Carolina," he said. "I'm happy to be chosen and everyone at the school is proud of me. Meeting some of the members of the Army will be a special part of it too."
