Quick HiTs: Bull-ring, goal-line work highlighted

Tennessee's final practice before the onset of fall semester classes on Rocky Top commenced Monday evening with Butch Jones working his players through one of the lengthier bull-ring sessions of pre-season camp.

The session also marked obvious progress for injured defensive linemen Jacques Smith and Corey Vereen. While neither player was in pads, both were in uniform and Smith even donned a helmet as he did conditioning drills.

The man-on-man drills challenging players' physicality opened when Jason Croom beat Lemond Johnson.

Austin Sanders, the freshman offensive lineman from Cleveland, had a strong showing. Sanders beat both Jason Carr and Malik Brown. Kyler Kerbyson also had a convincing win against Carr, who was challenged out loud by Jones and forced to go three-consecutive battles.

Alan Posey lost a one-on-one battle against Greg Clark as well, among the several conducted.

The Vols welcomed freshman walk-on punter Trevor Daniel to the squad Monday, as Daniel began his acclimation process.

The team also worked some 11-on-11 two-point conversions and other goal-line drills. The opening two-point series was miserable for the offense, which had a false-start penalty and then saw Justin Worley gobbled up by the defense when no receivers could get open.

The second-team offense didn't fare much better, starting its conversion attempt also from the 8. Byron Moore picked off Nathan Peterman in the end zone and Jones ruled that Moore would have scored.

Working in some first-and-10 and goal-line situations, the Vols' defense stayed home on a first-down reverse at the 12. Rajion Neal then followed with a 10-yard touchdown and Marquez North scored an 8-yard touchdown on an end-around as Jones bellowed that center "James Stone, you're the gas pedal!"

The defense held from the 6 as Jordan Williams got some first-team action at left end.

With the twos, Drae Bowles fumbled on an end around the first snap. Tom Smith had back-to-back scoring runs of 10 and eight yards. On the final snap, Devrin Young fell down on an end around. Curt Maggitt did some 11-on-11 work with the second-team defense in a green jersey.

During some special teams work after a bad punt, Jones bellowed "C'mon! You shanked it and hit Mary Jo in the fourth row!"

Wearing green, non-contact jerseys were: Curt Maggitt, Justin King, Greg King, Pig Howard and Brian Randolph all were in green. Non-participants who worked out in the 'black hole' were: Smith, Paul Harris, Johnathon Johnson, Michael Williams, Alex Ellis, Ryan Jenkins, Dylan Wiesman and Marlin Lane.

VolQuest.com will tweet and post notes immediately following today's post-practice comments --- and will do so each day of camp. Additionally, we will have videos, a photo gallery, notes and multiple stories throughout the evening and into Tuesday as the Vols have a brief break as fall semester classes begin midweek on Rocky Top. We'll also have some special big-picture camp content throughout the week.
