Quick HiTs Day 5: 1-on-1s, Tennessee Tough drills shine
What appeared to be a more energized and engaged Tennessee football team returned Tuesday afternoon for its fifth-consecutive practice of pre-season camp, with coach Butch Jones once again pushing his players' competitive buttons early.
Jones almost from the immediate onset of practice dived into a number of one-on-one, goal-line passing situations. The offense largely dominated the work inside the 10-yard line, but there were a handful of defensive superlatives --- most notably an interception by Brian Randolph, who appeared to have an extremely productive day during practice's open portion.
The complete lineup of one-on-one battles follows:
Josh Malone beat Riyahd Jones
Emmanuel Moseley defended Ryan Jenkins
Jason Croom went high for a catch over D'Andre Payne
Josh Smith easily worked past Malik Foreman for six
Von Pearson snagged a back-shoulder pass over Cam Sutton
Justin Coleman defended North
Johnathon Johnson was defended by Michael Williams
Brian Randolph picked off a pass intended for Wolf
Alex Ellis scored against Devaun Swafford
Todd Kelly Jr. defended Daniel Helm
Brendan Downs scored against Evan Berry
A.J. Johnson overpowered and threw down A.J. Branisel
LaDarrell McNeil defended Alex Ellis
Ethan Wolf shook Curt Maggitt for a scoring catch
Daniel Helm scored against Lemond Johnson
Later, in some pass skeleton work, the Vols' opening offense was Justin Worley, Marquez North, Von Pearson, Josh Smith, Ethan Wolf, Alex Ellis and in an early four-wideout set, Vic Wharton was inserted.
Worley and the wideouts struggled to get on the same page during this segment, with a lone completion to North among four attempts.
Vol defenders in that set for Devaun Swafford, Brian Randolph, Emmanuel Moseley, Cam Sutton, Justin Coleman, Jalen Reeves-Maybin and A.J. Johnson.
Second-team offense consisted of: Josh Dobbs, Jason Croom, Josh Malone, Jalen Hurd, Johnathon Johnson, Daniel Helm and an extra tight end was Joe Stocstill. Dobbs completed two of three passes, including a very nice toss to a mostly wide-open Croom.
The defense consisted of: Lemond Johnson, D'Andre Payne, LaDarrell McNeil, Malik Foreman, Kenny Bynum and Dillon Bates. Todd Kelly Jr. also got some work here and continued to have a strong day.
Third-team quarterback play was both Nathan Peterman and Mike Wegzyn. Skill players in that offensive set were: Devrin Young, Drae Bowles, Alex Ellis, Ryan Jenkins, Brendan Downs and Jacob Carter.
The defensive unit in that set consisted of: Malik Foreman, Evan Berry, Elliot Berry, Michael Williams, David Priddy and Kelly among others.
Tennessee also worked extensively in its 'Tennessee Tough' drill, with the offensive and defensive lines waging some highly contested battles while also seeing the wideouts and offensive skill players working in some 'Tennessee Tough' battles. That prompted a mild scuffle between Bowles Geraldo Orta.
