Quick HiTs: Practice resumes, Jones experiments

After having media day on Thursday and some special teams work Thursday night, Tennessee was back on the practice field Friday morning in a workout that saw more goal-line work as well as a couple of position moves.

Freshman Jakob Johnson, who was in the linebacker position pictures on Thursday, got linebacker work on Friday morning and fellow freshman Neiko Creamer, who was moved to linebacker in the spring was back working on offense on Friday.

Offensive line coach Don Mahoney continues his great offensive line shuffle. Friday saw Marcus Jackson getting more work at center. Kyler Kerbyson worked a great deal at right tackle with freshman Jashon Robertson getting some first-team work at right guard. Mahoney is working hard at trying to create some depth and Robertson has certainly gotten everyone's attention to the point that his newcomer black stripe was removed from his helmet Friday morning before practice. Redshirt freshman Brett Kendrick got some of his most extensive work as he logged snaps at left guard.

On the defensive front, Dewayne Hendrix and Derek Barnett continue to get plenty of work and Hendrix looked to have a better morning against the run than we have seen the last week or so.

While head coach Butch Jones would not name his second team quarterback on Thursday after naming Justin Worley the starter, Nate Peterman continues to get the bulk of the second team work during the periods the media is allow to observe.

The early part of practice appeared to be a good day of work for freshman tailback Derrell Scott. Freed from the green non-contact jersey he's been sporting since last week, Scott got the chance to show his physical strength in some inside runs as Jones was clearly challenging his line of scrimmage early. Scott's burst and elusiveness looked as good as advertised as it has all camp, but the ability pick up tough yards after contact was impressive.

Tennessee is also in search of some depth in the deep-snapper position. So Jones and the staff are doing some experimenting looking for depth. Ethan Wolf, Jordan Williams and a couple of walk-ons all got some work as a snapper in individual drills on Friday. It's at least the second time this week that Wolf has gotten some additional work at deep-snapper.

Elsewhere in special teams work, freshman Aaron Medley who has been on a maintenance plan the last few days didn't kick in kickoff work. Those duties were handled by George Bullock and Derrick Brodus. Jones said on Thursday that Bullock was the leader in the race for placekicker and kickoff duties, but he has also made it clear that his kickers haven't been consistent enough.

Running back Devrin Young was in a green jersey. Receiver Vic Wharton remains limited and didn't get team work on Friday. Running back Treyvon Paulk, tight end Woody Quinn, and defensive lineman Jaylen Miller all joined Wharton in his limited work on Friday morning working with the strength coaches.

Linebacker Curt Maggitt didn't practice again. Maggitt was on the practice field for the first time in a week. He was in a walking boot on his injured ankle. Center Mack Crowder returned to the practice field after being held the last few days due to an ankle sprain. Dylan Wiesman also continued to show progress as he tries to get his legs healthy for the season-opening game.
