LEXINGTON, Ky. — There is a new record holder for 3-pointers made in a single Tennessee basketball season.

With Chaz Lanier's third made 3-pointer in the 2-seed Vols' Round of 32 game against 7-seed UCLA, he notched his 119 on the year.

This surpasses the previous record set by Chris Lofton of 118 in the 2007-08 season.

NCAA Tournament record already tied

Lanier has already written his name into the Tennessee record book.

In the Vols' opening win over 15-seed Wofford of the NCAA Tournament, Lanier poured in six threes. This let him join Dalton Knecht, Santiago Vescovi and Chris Lofton for the most made threes by a Tennessee player in an NCAA Tournament game.

Lofton set the record against Wichita State in the 2006 tournament. He tied it a year later vs. Ohio State, before Vescovi matched the record in First Round game against Longwood in 2022. Knecht added his name to the list in the Vols' Elite Eight loss to Purdue last season.

His 29 points in the game also placed him toward the top of a Vols record. This was the third most points in an NCAA Tournament game by a Tennessee player.

It sits behind Knecht's 37 points in the Elite Eight loss to Purdue a year ago and Ernie Grunfeld's 36 against VMI in a loss.

This mean's Lanier's 29 points are the most by a Vol in an NCAA Tournament win ever.

Lanier's dominant season

Tennessee is used to getting these type of showings from Lanier. Over the course of the year, he is averaging 18 points on 43.8% shooting from the field and 40.3% on 3-pointers.

This showing has landed the guard on multiple All-American lists while he earned SEC Newcomer of the Year and an All-SEC Second-Team nod.

Lanier's season-high in scoring sat at 30 in the win over Texas A&M on the road. He shot 10-for-18 from the field and 8-for-13 on 3-pointers.

He has made four or more 3-pointers in 14 games this year.
