Mostella dismissed from team

Tennessee junior guard Detrick Mostella has been dismissed from the squad for a violation of team rules per sources.

The Decatur, Ala. native was the second leading scorer on the team at 10.5 ppg and just last month was named SEC Player of the Week after scoring a career high 25 points to help lead the Vols to a win at ETSU.

That’s a severe blow for a Tennessee team that already relies heavily on an abundance of youth. Mostella, along with seniors Robert Hubbs and grad transfer Lew Evans, was one of only three upperclassmen on the Vols’ roster.

Mostella was the last holdover on the team from Donnie Tyndall’s hastily assembled 2014 signing class.

He had emerged as a valuable performer as this season has progressed capable of providing instant offense off the bench.

He’ll be remembered as one of the most streaky offensive players to suit up for the Vols in recent memory. That was illustrated most clearly at the end of last season when he want on a three game hot streak in the SEC tournament, averaging 18.0 ppg as the Vols got hot and won games over Auburn and Vanderbilt before falling to LSU in the quarterfinals.
