Tennessee takes No. 1 spot in D1Baseball Top 25

The Vols, already off to a program-best start, swept a top 10 Florida team in their SEC opener at Lindsey Nelson Stadium for the best start by a defending national champion ever at 20-0.

It was also enough for Tennessee to jump LSU for the No. 1 spot in the D1Baseball Top 25 this week.

The Vols are now a consensus No. 1 team in the recognized polls.

Tennessee beat the Gators, 5-3 in Game 1 of its first conference series last Friday, going in front for good on Hunter Ensley’s two-RBI double in the fifth inning.

The Vols used a nine-run inning in the seventh to run-rule Florida, 10-0 in seven innings in Game 2 on Saturday and got 7.0 scoreless innings from starting pitcher Marcus Phillips.

Tennessee fell behind again in the series finale on Sunday before Cannon Peebles brought the Vols back with an RBI double in the sixth to open the way for a 7-4 win.

The Vols will host ETSU in a midweek tilt on Tuesday (5 p.m. ET, SEC Network+) before going on the road in league play for the first time at No. 12 Alabama (20-1) in three a game series in Tuscaloosa this weekend.
