Instate ATH Latrell Bumphus updates recruitment

It’s been a wild spring semester for Hardin County High School jumbo athlete Latrell Bumphus.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound defensive end and tight end has seen his stock soar this spring as he’s picked up offers from Auburn, Tennessee, Southern Cal, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Oregon, Penn State, Texas A&M and most recently Alabama and Florida.

“It’s been really good and crazy,” Bumphus said. “I didn’t expect anything to happen like this and it’s all happening at once.”

Bumphus said he keeps in regular contact with Tennessee, Auburn, Memphis, Kentucky, Florida and several other schools and noted the next time he will visit Rocky Top is likely for the Vols’ Orange Carpet Day in mid-June.

Tennessee is seemingly a school that will be in the mix with Bumphus for the long haul.

“I grew up a Tennessee fan and every time I go up there they really treat me like I’m one of their own,” Bumphus said. “And I love the fan base.”

Bumphus has also paid attention to the group of defensive linemen Tennessee’s put together and likes how he could fit in with the Vols’ front.

“That’s really nice to see because I can watch and learn and see what I need to do at the next level,” Bumphus said.

While Tennessee would like to see Bumphus on the defensive line, other schools see him as a tight end at the next level. Either way, Bumphus said he doesn’t have a preference.

“I don’t care where I play. Some schools want me on defense and some want me on offense at tight end. It’s about even. Half of them are defense and half of them defense.”

Bumphus added that Florida has been coming after him hard recently.

“They’ve just been a winning team and they’ve always been a team that’s good,” Bumphus said.

The Savannah prospect will visit Alabama this weekend and beyond that and a Tennessee trip this summer he doesn’t have anything set up at this point.

He plans on taking his time and likely taking several official visits in the fall.

“I’m going to take my time and wait for the right time to do something,” Bumphus explained. “I want to take my official visits.”
