Saturday afternoon Tennessee faces a monumental challenge in taking on the number one team in the country. What's key for the Vols to have a chance to shock the world? Here are four in what we call The Cheat Sheet.
1. Win the turnover battle – Of all the keys in the cheat sheet this might be the hardest to accomplish. Tennessee played without a turnover last week for the first time this season. And are now -4 on the year in the turnover margin. Ten offensive turnovers this season is too many. But only forcing 6 turnovers defensively is bad. In the last three games, the defense has only one takeaway.
But the reason this is such a challenge this week is because it's Alabama. The Crimson Tide are unbelievable when it comes to the giveaway/takeaway category. The Tide have forced 14 turnovers in 7 games and have only turned it over 3 times. Those three turnovers have come in the last two games.
2. Win in the redzone – Tennessee hasn't scored a touchdown in 10 quarters. Getting to the redzone is going to be a challenge. And scoring is even a bigger challenge. In seven games, Alabama has allowed 15 trips and only 7 of them have ended with a touchdown. Tennessee only has 10 touchdowns in 19 trips. Obviously inside the 20 is a struggle.
Defensively, forcing a 'Bama field goal in the redzone is a serious win. Alabama's offense is 33 of 36 in the redzone with 25 of them being touchdowns.
The Vols must win in the redzone.
3. Get something cheap – Explosive plays, easy scores have been non-existent for the Vols. To have a chance at an upset they need some “cheap” points. Tennessee has to hit a play in the kicking game. Get a fortunate bounce on defense. Execute a trick play.
Obviously, you get the point. Tennessee is not going to drive it the length of the field on any kind of regular basis. They aren't going to stonewall the Tide defensively. So to try and pull of an upset the Vols need some cheap points points in any and all phases of the game.
4. Survive the first half – Alabama has a lot of impressive stats, but what they are doing in the first half is ridiculous. Alabama has outscored their opponents 169-26 in the first half. Florida State and Colorado State are the only two teams this year to score a first half touchdown against Alabama.
Tennessee has scored 61 points in the first half and have allowed 53 points in the first two quarters.
