INDIANAPOLIS — Zakai Zeigler made more history on the biggest stage of Tennessee’s season on Friday.

The senior guard, who became the program’s all-time assist leader in the 2-seed Vols’ NCAA Tournament First Round game against 15-seed Wofford last week, is now the SEC single-season assist record holder after recording his 261st assist of the season on a lob to Felix Okpara during the first half of Tennessee’s Sweet 16 game vs. 3-seed Kentucky at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Zeigler was previously tied with former Ole Miss guard Sean Tuhoy, who set the previous record in 1979-80. He entered the game needing one assist to move into first place all-time.

The 5-foot-9 Zeigler, who averages 13.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 41.3% shooting per game, became the career assist-holder at Tennessee after recording 12 assists against Wofford, breaking former player Johnny Darden's record at 732 assists.

The SEC Defensive Player of the Year, Zeigler set the program record in steals with 250 during the Vols' 74-56 win over Georgia on Jan. 15.

"It was a big blessing," Zeigler said on March 20. "We knew (the assists) was going to be there. We watched a lot of film. I got to give a lot to my coaches and my teammates, just seeing an open guy and not trying to force too much. Breaking a record that was 50-years-old is a really big blessing and it means a lot to me."

Tennessee leads Kentucky, 23-15 midway through the first half (TV: TBS/TruTv).

The winner will play 1-seed Houston or 4-seed Purdue in the Elite Eight on Sunday.
