Tennessee softball roundup: Lady Vols sweep former assistant coaches

Tennessee softball welcomed home former assistant coaches Kate and Chris Malveaux who now serve as Auburn's co-head coaches.

The No. 4 Lady Vols earned a sweep in the series, winning all three narrow games.

Here's what happened.

April 17: Auburn (W, 4-2)

The Lady Vols got a late surge to move past Auburn in game one. Tennessee trailed 2-0 in the sixth inning before a pair of solo shots tied it up heading into the seventh. Then, Taylor Pannell smacked a two-run home run to walk it off.

The other home runs were hit by Sophia Nugent and Gabby Leach. Emma Clarke and Ella Dodge also had multi-hit days.

In the circle, it was Karlyn Pickens getting the ball. She built off her historic stretch by going the distance. She earned her 18th win of the year while allowing just four hits and two runs with six strikeouts.

April 18: Auburn (W, 6-4)

Tennessee gave Sage Mardjetko the ball to start game two. In four innings, she allowed Auburn to score four runs on five hits.

However, the Lady Vols put up a five-run second inning to take a lead they wouldn't give up from there. This featured a Nugent home run in back-to-back games.

Pickens got the ball to close the game out for the final three innings. She gave up two hits and no runs with six strikeouts. She was given the save.

April 19: Auburn (W, 4-1)

The Lady Vols seized their opportunity to earn an SEC sweep. Tennessee used the same stack in the circle this time, with Mardjetko starting and Pickens coming out of the bullpen.

Mardjekto threw six innings while allowing just three hits and a run. She struck out five. Pickens closed it out to earn her second save of the year in back-to-back games.

The Lady Vols got their insurance in the fifth inning. They produced three runs off singles from McKenna Gibson and Laura Mealer.
