According to a report from Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, the College Football Playoffs are likely going to look slightly different for this upcoming season.

CFP executives will hold a call today with the expectation that a 'straight-seeding model' will be put in place.

This would eliminate automatic byes for conference winners, while keeping intact the four Power Four conference and one Group of Five automatic bids into the field.

Dellenger also reports that conversations may take place on future expansion of the playoffs, but a decision on that is not expected to be made tonight.

Currently, the SEC and Big Ten are in control of future formats and are pushing for a 16-team playoff with four automatic bids to each conference. This would leave the ACC and Big12 with just two bids a piece.

An expanded playoff with guaranteed spots would likely lead to the SEC expanding to a nine-game format, as well. TV deals also play a role in the possible move to the extra in-conference game.

For a better understanding of what the straight-seeded model will look like, here's last year's field with that model in place.

For Tennessee, this would have meant hosting a playoff game inside Neyland Stadium against SMU. Instead, the Vols were forced to go on the road to play Ohio State, the eventual national champion.

If Tennessee would have defended its home field, it would have played a neutral site game against Georgia in a rematch of a regular season defeat in Athens. The Bulldogs, the SEC title winner, would be without Carson Beck who was injured in the championship game against Texas.

The Vols then would have either played Texas, Ohio State or Arizona State for a spot in the national title game if they would've survived to that point.
