Detailed Scott happy with offense's focus

The details have always meant more than most to offensive coordinator Larry Scott. He's coached nearly every position and that's because he does almost every thing across the board. It's something he pushes his players to do and the expectations are being met early on in spring practice.

"All the little things (make the difference)," Scott said. "We encourage them. Part of the details is to make sure players are coaching players, constructively and positively. You never know when you can make an impact. Coaches say things and we coach and teach, but sometimes it has to be reinforced from players and that's what you want."

A first year coordinator in the infancy of calling plays might want an experienced quarterback to lean on. Scott isn't most first year coordinators as he pushes his offensive unit through the first two weeks of spring. He likes the fact that he can mold these young quarterbacks into what he and quarterbacks coach Mike Canales want them to be.

"It's a great thing," Scott said. "You start with ground zero with anything and that's the fun part about it. You start with the foundation and that's what you really want to do with everyone's hard work and ideas. Cutting edge ideas on how we want to do it and build it. All we want to know is when we come out of spring, that we have built a strong foundation in which we can continue to build on during the summer and getting into fall camp."

And with that comes a delicate balancing act of trying to install the new wrinkles to the offense without giving his young players to much that they can't handle.

"It's kind of a balance," Scott said. "At the same time, where you want then to grasp things and get good, you want to challenge them mentally sometimes as well to be students of the game. To understand that the times you spend in the meeting room and out on the field isn't enough. Your preparation is critical. You have to mark out another 25 or 30 minutes a night in your dorm or in your apartment or come over after study hall and watch 15 or 20 more minutes of film."

And to have Canales on board with him has been a huge plus and the players are seeing the power of positivity.

"Just his energy and his passion and I knew he was going to be that way," Scott said. "His passion for the quarterback position which is critical to the development of your football team. It starts with that quarterback. Just his passion for coaching and how he delivers his message and his high level of consistency every day."

Trying to put his stamp on this team and program, Scott is guaranteeing he won't change from the guy they knew as the tight ends coach last season.

"They are going to get the same guy every day," Scott said. "They aren't gong to get a guy that comes in and let distractions and all those things around him. We are gong to be consistent and steadfast. We are going to do things the right way and we are going to be detailed. I'm going to be accountable to them and we and going to be tough."
