ANALYSIS
The talented five-star has had a unique recruiting process as early on teams weren't sure on where they wanted the Georgia product to play. Some at defensive back, some at wide receiver and many leaving it up in the air to see where the athlete naturally transitions to.
The Vols identified Matthews as a wide receiver and their analysis seems to be on the right track. He is a speedy guy with a nice frame, displays the ability to run effective routes and excels at finding the soft spots of the defenses. This combination gives his quarterback high percentage completion attempts. The strong hands are a huge plus as the Parkview standout catches the majority of the passes that come his way.
The current state of the wide receiver room at Tennessee is youthful. Matthews being an early enrollee could open doors to see the field early, especially if the development goes as planned. It would not be surprising to see Matthews get some quality playing time in year one.
Matthews is likely to be one of Nico Iamaleava's favorite targets in the future.
