Lady Vols walk-on guard Edie Darby medically retires from basketball

The Lady Vols are losing a walk-on guard due to medical retirement.

Edie Darby, after three years with Tennessee, has announced her retirment.

"Getting to wear "Tennessee" across my chest and be a Lady Vol these past 3 years has been so rewarding in so many ways," Darby wrote. "Playing on the biggest stage in women's basketball has truly been a dream come true. I am filled with so much gratitude for every moment - every game, every teammate, and every person who believed in me and supported me through it all."

Darby's decision to medically retire comes after a junior year that featured a pair of injuries. She initially missed five games early in the year due to a left foot injury. She was also inactive in the NCAA Tournament following an appearance in the Round of 64.

In her junior year, Darby recorded eight appearances. She averaged 1.8 points per game with 0.4 rebounds and assists per outing.

As a sophomore, Darby played in 13 games. She averaged 1.1 points, 0.8 rebounds and 0.4 assists.

Her freshman year saw 10 games of action. She averaged 0.7 points, 0.4 rebounds and 0.2 assists per appearance.

Darby was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in both 2023-24 and 2022-23. She will still attend the University of Tennessee as a student to complete her degree. She currently working toward a major in biological sciences and a minor in sociology. She says her goal is to become a doctor.

Darby is an in-state player who played her high school ball at Greenfield. There, she made the TN Report All-State in 2020, 2021 and 2022. As a senior, she earned district MVP. She was an All-District member in each of her four high school seasons and three-time All-District Defensive Team member.

As a senior, she averaged 16.8 points., 4.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists. and 3.3 steals per game. This came on 45% shooting from the field and 32.7% on 3-pointers.

As an eighth grader in 2018, she helped her high school win the 2018 state title. As a senior, Greenfield built a 34-0 record before the season was cancelled due to Covid.

Academically, she was the valedictorian at GHS.

Darby spent all three of her seasons with the Lady Vols alongside her sister, Tess Darby. Her older sister played five years at Tennessee appearing in 146 games throughout her career with 84 starts.

She averaged 5.8 points on 36.4% shooting from range in her career.
