Tennessee senior wide receiver Josh Smith sustained what is believed to be a broke collarbone during Sunday’s practice, sources confirmed to VolQuest.com.
The Knoxville native will be reevaluated on Monday and could miss up to two months if surgery is required.
WNML’s Jimmy Hyams first reported the injury.
The injury is a brutal blow for Smith, who looked as healthy as he's ever been during training camp this August. The 6-foot-1, 206-pound slot receiver has been hampered by a litany of injuries throughout his Volunteers career.
In 2016, he caught just 13 passes for 97 yards and one touchdown, slowed by both ankle and groin injuries. Smith underwent double-groin surgery in January and also had ankle surgery in 2014, requiring a medical redshirt year.
For his career, the Christian Academy of Knoxville product has 58 receptions for 721 yards and five touchdowns. Smith has also served as Tennessee’s first-team punt returner in multiple games the last several seasons.
With Smith sidelined, sophomore Tyler Bryd and redshirt freshman LaTrell Williams are expected to see increased playing time at the slot.
