McClain was a member of the Longhorns' staff from 2022 through last season. This was under both Chris Beard and Rodney Terry who took over for Beard amidst controversy.
Prior to his time at Texas, McClain served as an assistant inside the SEC. He coached at Georgia alongside Tom Crean from 2020-2022. He was also an assistant under Crean at Indiana from 2010-2015.
Other assistant coach stops in his career include Colorado from 2007-2010, TCU from 1994-1998, Hutchinson CC from 1986-1991, Independence CC in 1985, Sioux Empire JC in 1984 and Chadron State from 1982-1984.
McClain also has head coaching experience. His first job as the head man of a program came at Hutchinson CC after his assistant coaching tenure there. From 1991-1994, he won a NJCAA national championship and went 91-16.
After taking an assistant coaching job at TCU, he became head coach at Wyoming from 1998-2007. During that time, he led the Cowboys to four NCAA or NIT Tournament appearances.
He went 157-115 overall with Wyoming and made the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2002 while earning MWC Coach of the Year honors. He was fired following the 2006 season that featured no postseason appearance.
After going from both Indiana and Colorado as an assistant, he landed the head coaching gig at UIC. There, he coached five seasons before being let go. He posted a 76-93 record there.
This hiring comes shortly after Barnes added another assistant to his staff to replace the departing Rod Clark. He hired Cal assistant Amorrow Morgan who had recently taken a job at Florida State.
Other coaches alongside Barnes on the staff are associate head coach Justin Gainey, assistant coach Gregg Polinsky, assistant coach Brian Lentz and assistant coach Lucas Campbell.
Other pieces of the staff include Mary Carter-Eggert as Director of Basketball Operations, Garrett Medenwald as Director of Men's Basketball Sports Performance and Chad Newman as Athletic Trainer.
